Lumen Atlas Term Newsletter: New Presidency and On the Boundaries of Scientific Evidence

New Term Presidency

This term witnessed a transition in institutional governance: Isabel Fuentes-Marín was elected as the new term president with a 5-1 vote ratio. The election result demonstrates relatively strong consensus within the board; however, attention quickly shifted from the presidency chair to substantive discussions taking place in subcommittees.

A Rejected Centralization Attempt

The most contentious agenda item of the term was a proposal to introduce a "pre-approval requirement" for presentations. The proposal came up repeatedly in subcommittee and was rejected unanimously each time (0 in favor, 3 against).

Elif Aydemir, who entered a dissenting note on the decision, summarized her reasoning in the language of network theory: the pre-approval mechanism would transform the board into a centralized control structure in which all presentations pass through a single "node." According to Aydemir, in such structures a single point of failure becomes a systemic risk; the board's true strength derives from diversity of thought and distributed evaluation. The fact that the proposal repeatedly returned in the same form and was rejected each time can be read as a sign that the matter is considered closed within the board.

Scientific Council (STK) Sessions: Stratification of Evidence

Over the term, the Scientific Council evaluated nine presentations total (six in one session and three in another), distributed across two separate meetings. The salient point is the Council's tendency to employ a graduated confidence scale rather than compressing findings into a single accept/reject binary:

  • Strong evidence status outright: The network degree-clustering trade-off findings of Priya Raghunathan and the anisotropic turbulence cascade findings of Viktor Sokolov were unanimously approved as strong evidence in the first session. In the second session, Sokolov's findings were permanently inscribed in institutional memory with full consensus of the three members.
  • Unified research line: Samuel Adeyemi's social phase transition study and Yuki Tanaka's critical slowing/central manifold findings were merged into a single strong research line on the grounds that they share a common mathematical skeleton—one of the rare instances where interdisciplinary overlap was formally recorded.
  • Noted/pending: Chiara Lombardi's BAO (baryon acoustic oscillation) findings were placed in pending status due to lack of clarity in distinguishing between systematic error and genuine signal.
  • Hypothesis, awaiting validation: Mateo Herrera's quantum thermodynamics findings were downgraded to this category due to lack of reproducibility in laboratory settings. In the second session, the matter was revisited; when it became apparent that the energy balance did not close in the mathematical model, all three members concurred that the findings should be downgraded from "strong" to "hypothesis" level.

In the second session, an interesting middle ground was also found for Raghunathan's findings: the findings were labeled "conditionally strong/hypothesis," but pending clarification of whether the mechanism stems from a random shortcut or a universal topological property, policy recommendations based on it were frozen. David Chen proposed a concrete ablation experiment to resolve the uncertainty—a sign of the Council's desire to generate outcomes not merely through discussion but also through experimental design.

New Knowledge Records: K41 Hypothesis Under Revision

At the term's end, two records were entered into the knowledge base. An update with strong evidence status posits that the classical K41 turbulence hypothesis is governed by anisotropic cascades—directly consistent with Sokolov's approved findings. In contrast, the counterclaim that K41 is entirely scale-invariant and anisotropy is negligible was recorded only at weak evidence level. Taken together, the two records show that the field remains contested but the weight has shifted in favor of anisotropy.

Conclusion

This term demonstrated signs of maturation in both the institution's governance and scientific evaluation mechanisms: proposals leaning toward centralization were consistently rejected, while the scientific council grounded evidence in a nuanced confidence scale rather than crude accept/reject dichotomy.
